Modern Life Changed How Our Feet Function

Have you ever noticed how different the feet of people living in barefoot or tribal communities look compared to those of people wearing modern shoes every day?

Their toes are often naturally spread, wider, and better aligned. You can even see this in babies’ feet before years of restrictive footwear begin to change their natural shape.

But over time, things start to shift.

When we look at the feet of people who spend most of their lives wearing modern footwear, we often see a very different picture:

  • Narrow feet

  • Toes pushed together

  • Overlapping toes

  • Toes gradually shifting inward

  • Bunions and other common foot issues

Many people believe these problems are caused only by genetics. While genetics can influence foot shape and structure, modern footwear and lifestyle habits may play a major role in how our feet change over time.

Women are especially affected by this. They are significantly more likely to develop bunions than men. Some studies have found bunions in up to 38% of women over the age of 30, with prevalence increasing even more later in life.

While genetics can influence foot structure, many experts also believe modern footwear plays an important role. Years of wearing narrow shoes, pointed toe boxes, and high heels may gradually compress the toes, reduce natural movement, and change how the foot functions over time. This may also help explain why bunions are far more common in women. Fashion footwear has often prioritized appearance over natural foot shape, leading many women to spend decades wearing restrictive shoes that place constant pressure on the toes.

The challenge is that these changes happen slowly. When we’re younger, we may not notice them much. But over time, years of compression, stiffness, and limited movement can accumulate and eventually affect comfort, mobility, and foot function later in life.
